Game level texturing: Introduction (PART 1 to 5)

Game level texturing: Introduction (PART 1 of 5)

Published on Jul 2, 2014

This is the introduction video from the new set of quick tutorials, dedicated to game level texturing in Blender and Unity.

What is it about?
We’ll discover how to texture the scene using what can be called ‘megatexture’ approach. One model, 1 big texture, that’s all!

Rather unconventional technique (parts of the model can’t be reused), but still has its pros. Like artistic freedom and great performance – only 1 drawcall in Unity.

So, in this tutorials we’ll discover how to:

1. Block out the model
2. Optimize it
3. Unwrap everything into 1 UV map
4. Paint and project the texture
5. Clone details from 2-nd UV map
6. Bake it
7. Enjoy the result and start making games (this is optional)

Game level texturing: Modeling and retopology (PART 2/5)

Video #2 from the new set of quick tutorials, dedicated to game level texturing in Blender and Unity.

We need some geometry to put our texture on! So let’s block out the basic shapes and retopologize it to fit into polygon budget.

What is it about?
This is ‘megatexture’ approach. One model, 1 big texture, that’s all!

Rather unconventional technique (parts of the model can’t be reused), but still has its pros. Like artistic freedom and great performance – only 1 drawcall in Unity.

Game level texturing: Texture Atlas (PART 3/5)

Discover how to automatically join UV maps of all models into 1 mega-UV. Why not simply join all models? Go ahead and watch 😉

Video #3 from the new set of quick tutorials, dedicated to game level texturing in Blender and Unity.

Today we’ll use the add-on by Paul Geraskin called Texture Atlas.

Game level texturing: Projection (PART 4/5)

Learn how to use the image editor to quickly make textures and project it onto the geometry in Blender.

Game level texturing: Clone from 2nd UV map (PART 4.5/5)

In this tutorial we’ll continue to explore texturing techniques to finish the game level (sort of):
1. Refine texture in the image editor
2. Clone from 2-nd uv map

Game level texturing: Bake lightmap in Blender and Unity (PART 5/5)

Discover how to bake lightmaps (and ‘complete’ maps) in Blender and Unity. That’s a pretty solid way of creating a stunning realtime content for our games.

And yeah, you’ll probably learn nothing about surviving on demon-infested Mars base.
